William Bispham, Philadelphia, b. ca. 1720
On February 27, 1771, William Bispham of Blockley Township was assigned an apprentice by Jacob Graff named Jane Peacock. Perhaps Mr. Bispham was a weaver?? (See below.)
In January, 1780, a William Bispham dined with the family of Christopher Marshall in Lancaster, PA.Mr. Marshall bought of him three and a half yards of yard-wide tow linen for which he paid him thirty-eight continental dollars; then he lent him the second volume in folio of Bishop Burnet’s History of his own time.
It is thought that this William Bispham was a citizen of Philadelphia who had left on account of the British occupation, and who in 1780 resided between Lancaster and Downingtown, now in Chester County, PA.
If William Bispham did move out of Philadelphia during the occupation by the British, he must have moved back.In the 1790 Census, William Bispham is living with 2 females in Blockley Township; I assume that one of these is my ancestor, Elizabeth Gardner, who may have married Mr. Bispham after she outlived her first two husbands.
Here is an item listed in the Pennsylvania Gazette on June 11, 1794.“Stolen from the market, about six weeks ago, a light bay mare, with a black mane and tail, a small star in her forehead, and about 14 hands high. Whoever takes up said mare, and brings her to Mr. Siter, at the Middle Ferry on Schuylkill, shall have four dollars reward and reasonable charge, paid by William Bispham, Blockley.”
If you know any more about this man, I would appreciate your letting me know.
