Here it is 3 and a half years since the last message when I stumble on the name Peter Gunster.I wonder if anyone will find my message before another 3 years?
I am a descendant of Peter Gunster and Marie Birtel by way of their 8th son, Peter Francis Gunster, and his wife Margaret Sarah Landmesser.Peter and Margaret's only daughter Helen Marie Gunster married Louis August Sonneland and had one daughter, Nancy Helen Sonneland. She married my father, John Louis Corl.
Barbara Hale Reynolds' relative married the 1st son of Peter and Marie, Joseph Henry Gunster, who was born 22 (or maybe 24) August 1831, in Lockweiler, Saarland.
I believe Peter Gunster was born in Wadern, Saarland, on 29 March 1805 and had a middle name of Joseph. He and Marie and 8 of their 9 children (all sons) are on the passenger list of the Isaac Bell arriving in New York on 7 March 1853.They went to Scranton, Luzerne County, later Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, where their 1st son was already established.I expect these 9 Gunster sons are the founding immigrants of many of the Gunsters in America.
I have just found on the internet the passenger list for the SS Western Metropolis arriving at New York from Bremen, Germany, and Cowes, Isle of Wight, England, (or maybe Southampton) on 9 November 1867 with 2 of the passengers:
Peter Gunster, age: 62, male, occupation: Mercht, country to which he belongs: Germany, country of which he intends to become an inhabitant: U. States, part of vessel occupied during the voyage: 2nd saloon.
Marie Gunster, age: 57, female, country to which she belongs: Germany, country of which she intends to become an inhabitant: U. States, part of vessel occupied during the voyage: 2nd saloon.
I believe that they were returning from visiting their birthplaces and relatives.Peter Gunster died in 1869 and Marie (Birtel) Gunster died in 1892.I wonder what the relationship (if any) is between Marie and the Birtel brothers that Patti reported as immigrating in 1867 and 1871 to Scranton?
Peter Francis Gunster went to Germany in 1873 and 1874 to continue his medical education and collected copies of birth records for his parents and brothers.
By the way, Margaret Sarah Landmesser was the daughter of Louis (or Lewis) W. Landmesser, who was born in 1822 or 1823 in Spiesen, Saarland, Prussia. This community is not more than 30 km from Lockweiler.Ithink Louis Landmesser settled in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, and owned or operated coal mines but I don't know when he left Saarland or married Margaret Greenley, the mother of Margaret Sarah Landmesser.
