I am posting this information in hopes it will help someone who is researching BIRT families in Indiana. Hypatia Laughlin, daughter of Rushville pioneer William Beatty Laughlin, married for her second husband one Levin or Levan BIRT. The 1850 census of Center Township, Howard County, Indiana shows the family as follows: HH #41 BIRT, Levin - 43 - Merchant - born Ohio BIRT, Hypatia - 41 - born Pennsylvania BIRT, William S. - 20 - Carpenter - born Ohio BIRT, Robert H. - 17 - Clerk - born Indiana BIRT, John S. - 14 - born Indiana It is not known if these three sons were children of Hypatia and Levin or if they were Levin's children by a former marriage. A Levin Birt is also found in the 1830 census of Greene County, Ohio, along with other Birts. Levin Birt died 5 July 1862 in Howard County, Indiana at the age of 55 years, 6 months, and 16 days. He was buried at the Pioneer Cemetery in that county. There is a Clement Burt, age 35, Merchant, in the 1880 census of Rushville, Rush County, Indiana, with 31-year-old wife Hypatia Burt. Coincidence? There is a John S. Burt, age 44, born Indiana, in the 1880 census of Arlington, Rush County, Indiana. His wife was named Adaline, children were William L, Elizabeth, Robert W., Edward, Anna L. Also living with them was an 8-year-old niece, Beady Burt. This John S. Burt is almost certainly the son of Levin Birt as found in the 1850 census. I did not find the other two Birt brothers in this census. I am not related to this family except indirectly through Hypatia Laughlin, whose father was my ancestor. I have no further information on any of these families.
