Unfortunately there are a bunch of John Birges around that date. However, that could be the John W. Birge of the Civil War "Birge's Sharpshooters" - the 66th Illinois Volunteers. Try to contact the reenactors through their web site ( http://members.aol.com/wss66ill/index.htm ) or e-mail (wss66ill@aol.com). I'd love to know what you find out.
