Brenda:
As far as I know..., the lineage of Birdwell families in early Jackson Co, TN are not documented by anyone. However here is what I have in my files;

Yes the William Birdwell in Jackson Co., TN, spouse of Betsy, is believed to be the son of 'old' George Birdwell (c1720). I have seen several folks list that 1811 date of death for William but it is apparently wrong. The census in Jackson Co, TN in both 1820 and 1830 appear to still list this same William Birdwell. So it is suspected he died AFTER 1830 and not in 1811.

The John Birdwell (1812) who lived in Jackson Co., TN was most likely either the son of William & Betsy Birdwell or the son of the widow Margaret Birdwell (see 1820 census there) and her undetermined husband (who some list as a Joseph Birdwell yet not the one who was the son of 'old' George).

Others who've looked closer into the Jackson Co. families list this John (1812) and Joseph (c1809) as the sons of William & Betsy. I can't confirm that but I'm comfortable that it is likely. They suspect the widow Margaret Birdwell was the mother of the slightly elder Joseph (c1803) and George (c1810) who are also found in later Jackson Co. records.

The lineage of the Jackson Co., TN families are still a matter of speculation. Looking at records for the 1840's and 1850's shows several Birdwell men who are fairly close in age; Robert (1795) Joe (1803), Joe (1809), Geo (1810), and John (1812). All of these men would be at least cousins, and some are brothers. Yet except for Joe (1803) & Joe (1809) who are obviously cousins there is only speculation as to how each is related to the other.

I don't know if it will ever be fully documented. Yet what I've shown here is a best guess based upon what I've seen.
