George W Birdsong and Samuel Thornton are on the same page, 1830 census, Capt Guids Dist, Oglethorpe co, GA.
I have several relatives who are named after neighbors, friends and respected people. I speculate Birdsong Thornton is named after the Birdsong family of Oglethorpe County Georgia. This speculation is farther corroborated by the fact Blanton Thornton is present in Meriwether County at the same time as Birdsong Thornton.
