Ellen,
I think I'm a distant cousin, also. My g-grandmother was Sarah A. Birdsell who married John D. Ward in Illinois in 1878. The 1880 census of Illinois list Clark, Welthea, and all of the children mentioned in the history of Morgan Co, IL that you posted a link to and it clearly has Sarah A., 3 years old just under Mary A. It would appear by that that they are twins, however; the history does not speak of her. The 1860 census lists a Sarah, but she would be much older. Do you know why Sarah A. (my g-grandmother)is omitted or any info on this subject.
