I wish I had seen this earlier. There was a typo in the Nezbeth book concerning when William Bird married Hannah Michal. Their marriage bond was posted on February 10, 1801 not 1810. William Semones was the Surety. (Bedford County Marriage Bonds)
They had one son, John Calvin Bird who was born on September 10, 1801. He was my GGG Grandfather on my paternal side.
On March 24, 1803, he married Hannah Thornton and they had at least 5 children, possibly as many as 7. One of them, Thomas Alexander, born in December 1816 (his gravestone reads 1818) was a GGG Grandfather on my maternal side. Thomas taught school in Franklin Co., Floyd Co. and Mercer Co. before moving here in Putnam Co. (WV). I recently found census records from Floyd Co. showing him and one of his sons (Silas Jenkins Bird) living in Floyd Co. in 1860. Silas was my GG Grandfather.
It has been known for many years that John and Thomas were half brothers and that John's mother was Hannah Michal and Thomas' was Hannah Thornton. John lost two sons in the Civil War and moved first to Mercer Co., WV then to Putnam. He and Thomas lived across the ridge from each other. Some of their descendants inter-married and continued to marry into the Oxley and Thornton families. Thomas' first wife was an Oxley from the Loudoun County Oxleys.
When you look at the Franklin and Bedford census records it is confusing and I'm still trying to figure some of it out. Too many Johns and Williams for my taste. I believe that this has contributed to the difficulty of tracking down where this Bird family really came from. Everybody seems to want to connect these Birds to the Tidewater (Westover) Byrds and I have my doubts. If, and I do mean if, John Sr. or William Bird were from Loudoun Co., to me it points to an immigration from Pennsylvania or Maryland. I have also given thought to a connection to the Birds of Bath Co., but so far I haven't seen one, though that family is connected by marriage to another one of my maternal families.
I hope to make another trip to the area this year and be able to thoroughly dig into the records and see if there was anything I missed years ago. This was meant to be simply a correction to a wedding record, but it seems I can't just stop with that. I hope this helps.
