According to my cousin, Stephen did kill Cora. He had been in the Hospital for the Insane at Weston, Lewis County, WV since about 1880, the year after Cora was born. He was released for a time after 1881 and fathered two sons, born in 1882 and 1885. My cousin's aunt was a daughter of one of the sons and had told her that her mother had told her that Stephen took a stick and beat Cora to death with it. She was between 9 and 10 years old at the time.

I was also told that Stephen was diagnosed with something similiar to what they now call Altzeimer's Disease now and that at one time he was a very smart man. He did die on December 24th 1896 of Tuberculosis and was buried nearby. My cousin has a copy of his death certificate.

As a side note, that hospital was known earlier as the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum and is now a tourist attraction. It has also reverted to its former name though there is a controversy surrounding it. For a nominal fee it can be toured and on certain nights for a higher fee and a reservation, you can be locked in for "ghost hunts" and it has been featured on the show "Ghost Hunters". This past summer my family took a day tour (2 hours) of the place and it is a spooky place even during the day. You also feel a great deal of sadness there especially after hearing of what went on there.

I hope that this will help you in your research.
