Hello all... Not to be confused with the recent posting about Robert Bird Smith, I am a descendent of Robert Smith Bird who emigrated to Tasmania (Australia) in 1835 to take up a position as Schoolmaster at Evandale, in northern Tasmania in 1835. He arrived here with his wife Mary Bird (nee Jones); they were married at Lowestoft, Suffolk: February 14th 1835 and the marriage certificate shows that R.S. Bird was from Weasenham, in the County of Norfolk, England. I believe R.S. Bird was born in 1804, possibly 25 FEB 1804 at Swanton Morley (near Weasenham) in the County of Norfolk, England. (There is also another Robert Bird with a christening date of 09 APR 1803 at Gresham, Norfolk; Gresham is also in the vicinity of Weasenham.) I would be curious and interested to find out if anyone else has Bird family connections from Norfolk c. early 1800s, particularly from Gresham, Swanton Morley or Weasenham. Perhaps you know of a "Robert Bird" in your family tree who disappeared from his siblings, going off the radar, so to speak? (In recent contact with Sue Bird, she advises me that there is a record for a "Robert Smith Bird" buried in Kingsbury, outside of London in 1793. So there is a vague possibility that this person might have been "my" R.S. Bird's grandfather or uncle?) After arrival in Tasmania, "my" Robert Smith Bird and his wife Mary had six children, though only four survived infancy. I can give you further detail of the birth dates etc of his children born in Tasmania (Australia) 1836-1847, if you think they may be connected to your ancestors: Robert Alfred Bird; Frederick Augustine Bird; Samuel Ballachey Bird; and Charlotte Elizabeth Bird. Cheers, Arthur C. Notify Administrator about this message?
