John Bird and Tabitha Taylor, Wall(s) Connection
My ggg-grandparents were John Bird and wife Tabitha Taylor. I'm trying to find "source" information for what is known about this line. Here's what I have and yes, I'm including sources!
JOHN BIRDborn 30-Mar-1780. Date of birth from Corine Afton's book, corresponds with his age on the 1840 US & 1855 IL census. His first child born 1817-1818 was my gg-grandma NANCY BIRD. She was born in TN.
On the 1860 US Census John Bird stated his place of birth as SC... Although John was deceased before 1880, the 1880 US Census is interesting for the responses provided by his children. Here's how the Bird children responded to where their father was born on the 1880 Census: Nancy Bird Williams Hawkins - NC, Betsy Bird Smith - NC, Thomas Booker Bird - SC, Rhoda Bird Wiggs - SC, Catherine Bird Huggins - NC, neither Susan Bird Huggins nor Isaac Bird provided parents places of birth on the census.
John Bird is on the 1830 & 1840 US Census in Washington Co., IL. He was on the 1855 IL Census in Johnson Co., IL and on 1860 US Census he was in Union Co., IL.
So where was John Bird before 1830? His War of 1812 Pension states he enlisted in Nashville TN in 1814.He married Tabitha Taylor in 1812 in Williamson Co., TN, so it's likely that he and his wife were still living in Middle Tennessee when he enlisted.
Several researchers place Cornelius "Neal" Bird born 1810 as a first child of John Bird from an earlier marriage. Neal was born in 1810 in TN, putting John in TN before 1812. Neal Bird lived in Union Co., IL per the 1850 & 1860 US Census. He was in Dunklin Co., MO by 1870.
I've tried tracing John Bird's line through Neal Bird and his neighbors. In 1860 Neal was living near Bird Wall(s) and other Walls families. I've wondered if there is a connection because ofthe first name Bird and also the Walls are from SC. The Walls families are on the 1850 Census in Wilson Co., TN. On the same page there is a George Modglin b. 1820. Not to get too convoluted... Tabitha Taylor Bird's mother was a Modglin. The Wall(s) families were in Wilson Co. on the 1840 and 1830 Census too. There are no Wall(s) on the 1820 Census in Wilson Co. but there is a Mary Bird aged 16 to 26 years.
I've seen notes on the internet from researchers who state that John Bird was the same John Bird who was in Barren Co., KY. This makes some sense since he seems to have come to IL about the same time as the Williams families and the two families appear to be closely aligned--- I suspect the second husband of John's daughter Nancy Bird Williams was John Hawkins a son of Isom Hawkins and Rachel Williams--a cousin of her first husband John Williams. The Williams and Hawkins families were in Barren Co., KY and in Allen Co., KY.
Does anyone have a source for determining that the John Bird from Barren Co., KYis the same as the John Bird who went to Washington Co., IL?This just doesn't work for me since John Bird was in Washington Co. for the 1830 US Census and John Bird was counted in 1830 in Barren Co. Makes me think they were two different men!
