Hello Dot,
No, I actually did mean Joan of Acre; she was a Plantagenet.(There were several Joans that were descendants of Geoffrey Plantagenet and Mathilda the Empress, including Henry II and his royal line.Joan of Acre, Joan of Kent, etc.)They are usually distinguished by the town and/or shire that they came from; as was everyone else below the King (i.e. John of Gaunt, who came from Ghent in what is now Belgium.)I may have this wrong, but I seem to recall that Joan of Acre was a child of John Lackland (King John). It may have been a later King -- my handy-dandy royal lineage is at home, and I'm not!It may have been one of the Edwards...
You're thinking of Thomas Colet, Thomas More's best friend, who I'm nearly certain died "sp".Of course, the other obvious possibility for family relationships is the Colt family (Thomas' first wife was Jane Colt).I have also seen it spelled Colte, and a Thomas Bird m. _____ Colte according to the 1580 Visitation of Cheshire, as well as the 1634 Visitation of Essex. However, again this Thomas died "Sine prole".
Just to confuse matters further, William's brother was called "Symond" (Simon) Byrd, andHIS son Thomas was an Anglican rector.Simon's granchildren contain a Thomas also, who fits in well with the time line. However, I have no further information on him at this time. This would still leave the William Byrd - composer relationship nearly intact, with WB becoming an uncle. However, the Thomas More connection would be lost altogether.
Interestingly, the Scott family (Thomas Bird's dau. Hannah married Edmund Scott) is one that connects to the Scropes, and there is a good possibility of the Clark family of Hartford (Joseph Bird's wife was Mary Clark) also being in-laws with Ursula Scrope, who has been proposed as the spouse of Nicholas Clark of Hartford. My current theory is that Nicholas Clark and Joseph Clark of Hartford were brothers. That would make Nicholas Clark Mary's uncle. If this were true, then three of the four children of Thomas Bird married descendants of the Scropes.(I'm not sure about the James Bird=Lydia Steele ancestry; maybe a Scrope lurking in there too?
I'm currently of the opinion that the Scropes and the Rich family (of Richard Rich - Felstead, Essex) are connected either by blood or by association with the Birds of Hartford. No hard proof yet, though. The Scotts also link up with the Howards, and Henry Scott's children married into BOTH the Birds of Hartford, CT and the Byrds of Virginia. However, for me they're all in-laws, except for the Clarks.
