Ancestry of William Byrd, Thomas Bird
I recently discovered a biography on William Byrd, Sr. of Westover, VA (the famous settler) that contains an extensive pedigree for the family, with some interesting sidelights, too.
The genealogy was compiled by W.G. Stannard in 1894, and is based on Holms's "Heraldic Collections for Chester" (Harleian MSS. no. 2119) and from a pedigree prepared at the Heralds' College, London, in 1702, for William Byrd II.It was reproduced in a book entitled "Colonel William Byrd of Westover, VA" as Appendix B, but I can't locate the author's name.It was a standard biography on Byrd.It extends the Bird/Byrd lines back to William the Conqueror's time, and appears to be missing only about two generations between Hugo le Bird (fl. after 1066) and Hugh le Bird of Charlton (b. approx. 1115), as well as perhaps three generations during the reign of Edward III.
This particular genealogy shows the offspring of Thomas le Bird and Ales Palyn as:Anne, Raphe, Margery, Peter, Jane and Thomas. From other sources, I have obtained the following information about *this* Thomas Bird:
Thomas Bird, b. circa 1600, m. Mary _____, they were married in 1618 in London.
Could *this* be the Thomas Bird of Hartford, CT?*He* was born circa 1600, married Mary [Belden] in approx. 1618 IN LONDON, and died in Hartford, CT in 1662.
NOTE: This is NOT the Thomas Bird (b. 1598) that married Elizabeth Bird (his first cousin). His parents were John Bird and Elizabeth Bine, according to the pedigree of William Byrd II.The (partial) William of VA descent is as follows:
Robert Bird m. Elizabeth Lolland (Robert is Thomas le Bird's brother)
issue:John Bird (b. circa 1575)
John Bird m. Elizabeth Bine
issue:Thomas Bird (1598-1623)
Thomas Bird m. Elizabeth Bird
issue: John Byrd (1620-1677), William Bird (b. 1619), and Thomas Bird (1621-1709)
John Byrd m. Grace Stegge (b. 1620)
issue:William Byrd of Westover, VA (m. Maria Horsemanden), Thomas Bird (m. Mary Howlett), Elizabeth Bird (m. ____ Rand), Mary Bird (m. ____ Guy), Sarah (m. _____ Robinson).
The Byrd/Bird spellings are interchangeable and sometimes appear both ways in the same family.
If anyone has any good documentation about this Thomas Bird, son of Thomas le Bird and Ales Palyn, I would be very grateful. My e-mail is: [email protected]
Best regards,
Steve Bird
11th generation in descent from Thomas Bird of Hartford, CT.:-)
