Dennis,
We have shared info in the past.Recent info has led me to this conclusion. Reuben and Cecelia Birchfield's son Samuel who was born in 1837 is not the husband of Edna. Your Sam is in the 1900 Carter County census with his and Edna's 3 sons. He is age 54. The only Samuel Birchfied b1845/1846 in NC is Ezekial's son. Ezekial is the son of Nathan and Anna Mckinney Birchfield. Ezekial was born in 1820. His son Samuel was born in 1846. Samuel had an older sister Matilda and his grandfather was Nathan. Were these names not Sam and Polly's children's names. Are you sure Polly was a Hughes? Samuel Birchfield born 1836 died at the age of 80 in Carter County in 1917. I would imagine this was Reuben and Cecelia's son. The census fits this age in 1850 and 1860. She and lots of her sons lived in Hampton creek area of Carter county in early 1900s after moving from Mitchell Co. Of course you already knew that Reuben and Ezekial were brothers.
