Hello Fran...again I am aware that Jessie James lived in Tennessee (around Nashville) at some period after the War for Southern Independence... there are two related family stories: 1. Three Binkleys were shot and killed from ambush after the war.... Fact: at least one Binkley (spelling varient), a Jeff Davis supporter, was shot and killed in Cheatham Co. The murderer was caught, tried and convicted... but the reconstruction governor of Tennessee pardoned him. 2. Anthony Thomas Binkley (Tom), my g grandfather, served in the First Tenn vols during both the Mexican War and in the CSA (where he was reported KIA). Following the war, he drove the stage from Jerico, Tn to Hopkinsville, Ky... and was (according to the story) held up (the stage) by the said brother James et al. It is my suspect that there were secret societies (such as the KKK) that existed in Tennessee (and were supported by the population in defiance of the lack of justice that surrounded the reconstruction/martial law following the great war). And, Jessie James belonged to such societies and was therefore supported by the population after the style of Robin Hood. ...As to the name game: Binkley is unique; it is an adopted American name... the family orgins are Swiss where the name was written... Binggeli.... it was spelled nine different ways on the first boatload (alone) by English clerks in 1736... among those names are Binckele, Pinckele, Binkle, Benkley et al... however... the family (those who could write) agreed to the "Binkley" spelling by the first, 1790 census... However... down south, 'tis said ... a man what can't spell the same word several different ways don't count for much... What do you think? bink
