Hi, folks. Visiting our county's main library today, I was surprised to find Skordas' reference about Old Joe's first mention in America in 1671, which Janette (and Marsha) have pursued to the Farrington arrival document (quoted elsewhere by Janette). This post is just to tidy up Skordas' view of indenture. And maybe it could possibly bear on our view of how Old Joe started acquiring land within a few years of his immigration. Here is Skordas' quote about someone who was 'transported' to early colonial Maryland. Best, Jim Billiter - Jim@Billiter.com Post scriptum: Sorry for the funny format. I copied it from my formatted 'notes' without much success. But, at least the content appears, however weird. .. JB ------------- HISTORY PUB: "The Early Settlers of Maryland" by Skordas (see PASSENGER INDEX). Shows the record of Joseph Billiter in liber 17, folio 74. Joseph was transported in 1671. I.e.: someone else paid the passage. (In his prefix Skordas says, "... 'transported' means that someone other than the person indexed paid for his passage. Quite often a person 'transported' is also described as a 'servant', which means that he had contracted to repay the cost of his transportation by agreeing to act as a servant for a period of years. Under certain of the Conditions of Plantation, a servant was entitled to claim fifty acres of land upon completing his period of servitude satisfactorily. Such claims are indicated by the word 'service'.") ------ End Skordas quote ----------
