I am seeking any information about Joseph Billiter fl 1800-1820 Belle Vernon, Fayette Co, PA, b ? 1765-1774, particularly his origin. Vital records are lacking, but several Billiter researchers have assembled his family group from secondary sources: marriage ? Children: --Joseph b 1794-1800 PA m Elizabeth and "went down the river" to Brown Co, OH in the 1820's. Joseph built boats on the Monongahela River, where Interstate 70 now crosses it. He was the first ferryman of Belle Vernon, which was established about 1812. He was buried at Belle Vernon's first cemetary (Gould Hill) with sons James and Lewis. My brother, Ralph, and I tried to find the graves, but they was destroyed by development in the early 1900's. The landlord told us in 1990 that the Gould Hill site was formerly an Indian burial ground. Joseph, whom we've named the Boat Builder, is very likely a descendant of "Old Joseph" Billiter, who immigrated to the Delmarva in 1671 from Mannedorf, Canton Zurich, Switzerland (CH). Ralph and I have not been able to link the two Josephs and we have termed this problem the "Joseph Gap". (There are many geological Gaps in PA as well as geneaalogy gaps in records for the time of Joseph the Boat Builder.) I would be happy to hear from other Billiter (or Billeter) researchers and to exchange information. Best, Jim Billiter - Jim@Billiter.com
