Alpha & Amanda M. Peebles descendants

If you are a descendant of the following Peebles, please contact me: ALPHA (b.10/22/1794; d.7/23/1867) & Amanda H. McNairy (b.1/1/1812; d.10/21/1876) Peebles. Several descendants (which includes little ole me) of CELIA L.E.C. PEEBLES (b. 5/28/1821; d.2/1/1891), wife of William Riley Bailey and daughter of James & Mary Polly Peebles, are in the process of organizing a restoration/preservation committee to take back the Old Peebles Cemetery located in Webster Co., approximately 4 miles NW of Stewart, MS, from mother nature and the land owner who owns all of the land surrounding the cemetery. He has indicated in so many words to me that he will only allow access to the cemetery which is located about 1/4-1/2 mile from the main county road, when it does not interfere with his or his guests' wildlife hunting plans, etc. He has erected a gate (secured with chain & padlock) across an old county road leading to the cemetery. I would like permission to use your name on a 'petition' as a concerned descendant/member of the (unnamed - any suggestions?) 'Webster County Old Peebles Cemetery Preservation Association' in requesting that the Webster Co. Board of Supervisors reopen & gravel this road up to the cemetery. When the present owner's grandfather was still alive, no one had to even asked permission to pay respect to their loved ones. But then the road got closed because a bridge went out; the locked gate got installed. This may actually be the first cemetery in the area since the people buried here have been documented as the first settlers to this area - called Choctaw City in the early 1800's. Many of the headstones are in need of repair. We plan on clearing the saplings (growing too close to the headstones) & underbrush from the graveyard (ourselves) and eventually fence it all in (if funds become available). Several cousins accompanied me to the cemetery yesterday; we realize this project will be a long-term undertaking, but we feel we owe it to these pioneering ancestors of ours. If you can help in ANY way or offer ANY advice, please contact me. Thanks, deb in MS -> zapster@network-one.com
