Davis's error over English Billingsleys
Posted by: Luke Potter Date: June 01, 1998 at 07:57:36
  of 1285

Harry Davis claimed that the John Billingsley who emigrated to Holland, and whose children emigrated to America was the son of Francis Billingsley and Bridget Vernon. This however does not stand up against the evidence.

Davis appears not to have consulted many English sources, and a simple examination of the parish register from Astley Abbotts, Shropshire, shows that Francis and Bridget's son John was not born until 1601. Davis had claimed he was born in 1587, and married in 1612. Chronologically therefore it is clearly a different person. Furthermore the John who was born in 1601 can be traced to his death in London in 1655. He left a will in which he mentions holding land in Astley Abbotts, and gives the names of all his family and it is clearly not the Dutch family.

It is unclear what evidence Davis had for claiming that the Dutch John Billingsley was born in Shropshire in 1587. If there is any substance to this however, it may be that the Dutch John can be identified with a John son of William and Lucy Billingsley of Hallon, Worfield, who was born in 1587. (William may have been a son of the William Billingsley, lord of Astley Abbotts, who died in 1570.) John does not appear to have remained in Worfield, and is last mentioned in the will of his father in 1605 when he was left £30.

Has anyone out there looked at what evidence their is in the Dutch archives? Most of my research has been on the Shropshire family. I tie into the Billingsleys through the marriage of Mary Billingsley (daughter of Francis and Bridget) to Francis Rowley.

Stourbridge, England
