Clement Billingsley, death date, Alabama
Posted by: Pat Salis Date: December 13, 1999 at 14:28:28
  of 1285

I have seen seen various dates for Clement Billingsley's death in Alabama, both here and in other places. I now have photocopies, from the Autauga Co. registry, of documents related to Clement's will and the appraisal and disbursement of his estate.

Clement signed his will on 7 Sep 1839. The will was entered in the register sometime between 6 Jul 1841 and 14 Dec 1841. I'm missing the page showing exactly when the will was filed. The entry that appears just before Clement's will is dated 6 Jul 1841. After the will, the first entry related to Clement has the date 14 Dec 1841. The entry is entitled "Appraisement of property belonging to the Estate of Clement Billingsley," AND IT REFERS TO CLEMENT AS DECEASED. I think this makes clear that Clement died before 14 Dec 1841, and possibly sometime in July 1841. I have requested a copy of the page that should show the date of the will's filing, and it may give the exact death date. I'll let you know what I learn.

Where does the oft-reported death date of 1844 come from? Has it appeared in some official or family records? I saw the message here that Clement's headstone near Billingsley, AL, has the date 1844. What could explain the discrepancy with the Autauga Co. registry information?

Deck them halls, y'all
Pat, in Texas
