I have found by way of the census that Ben (Blu) and Catherine were living with different daughters in Texas in 1910 and 1920. Both were listed as widowed. Ben was with his daughter by his first wife. She was Sallie Lancaster. With them was her son, Oscar. She is also listed as widowed and the mother of 2 with 1 living. They are in Parker County, TX. In 1920 those three are in Palo Pinto, TX. Ben died in 1928 reportedly at the home of this daughter, Sallie, in Breckenridge, Stephens County, TX
In 1910, Catherine is listed with daughter, Effie, and her husband Burt Gamble and their 1 1/2 year old son. Catherine is listed as widowed. In 1920, she is with daughter, Birdie Grear and her husband, John and children Flavis, 9, Noble, 7 and Catherine, almost 4. Also in the household is John's widowed father, William. In 1930 she is still in this household. She died in 1931.
After Ben's death in 1928, she filed for a widow's pension based on his confederate service.
Can anyone explain whether the seperated living arrangements were based on financial or incompatability concerns?
