James Billingsley Revolutionary War Patriot

I have been searching for the proof that James Billingsley born 1726 and died 1776 at the hands of the Tories.,was actually active in the Revolutionary War.
I have read several articles that tells how the Tories came into his home and demanded money and so on, but the NSDAR does not accept just the story they need the proof of his involvement in the war.
James was my 5th great grandfather, I would love to submit his name into the DAR but need more proof.
Does any one that the proof?
Dorothy
