Hi Katy. For the full story, you should chase down an interesting self-published book written by Nina Kagarice Bigsby in 1993. She lives in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada with her husband Floyd. Here's a summary of what she discovered about Charles Bigsby and Marilla Gardner:
--- Charles Hiram Bigsby was born Oct 1859 in St. Clair Co, Mich. He was the only son of William Bigsby (or Bixby), supposedly from Canada, and Elvira Reynolds, b. 21 Oct 1837 (or 1839) in Hamilton, Upper Canada (now Ontario), died 18 Oct. 1914, Lakeport, St. Clair Co, Mich.. Elvira was the daughter of Daniel Reynolds and Elvria Etta Kemp. William seems to disappear from the story around 1860. Elivra remarried to Amos Hall in June, 1862, and Charles sometimes used the name "Hall". (Are you still with me? Make a family tree to map this out.)
--- Marilla "Rilla" Gardner, was born 25 Jan 1859 in Commerce, Oakland Co., Mich., to Hiram and Mary Gardner. She married Charles on 5 Nov. 1879 at Brockway, St. Clair Co, Mich,
--- Charles and Marilla had 6 children. (1) Olive Bigsby, b 16 Feb 1881, d. 9 Oct 1900 in Hatton, Claire Co, Mich. (2) Mirto Edward Bigsby, b. 7 Mar 1883, St. ignace, MI, d. 17 Aug 1968 at Niles, MI. (3) Charles Hiram Bigsby, b. 26 Sept 1884, St. Ignace, d. 7 Oct 1977 at Ogden, utah. (4) Viola Bigsby, b 2 June 1887, Maple Valley, Sanilac Co, MI, di 19 April 1980 at Alma, MI. (5) Floyd Wilber Bigsby b 22 Oct 1889, d 9 Oct 1976 in Armstrong, BC, Canada.; Floyd in Saskatoon is one of his sons., (6) Claude Elmer Bigsby, b 10 Jan 1892, Hatton, MI; d 10 July 1980 at Booneville, Miss.
--- Charles deserted his family 20 June 1892. Rilla divorced him in 1898 and married Edward Lackie and they had a son Clare Fern Lackie, b. 8 Mar 1908 at St. louis, MI. d 11 Nov 1974 at Midland, MI. Rilla died 24 May, 1949, in Michigan.
