Birth reckoning for John Bigge (Biggs) of Lower Norfolk VA
Posted by: Andy (ID *****0702) Date: March 18, 2009 at 20:56:41
  of 2471

See the transcription of "Ages of Lower Norfolk County People" posted at

http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/norfolk/census/ages-2.txt

Scroll down to "Page 39" and note the names and ages recorded in the year 1656 of

MALBONE, Peter (23)
RIGGE, John (30)
EMPEROR, Francis (28)

[The compiler of the list warns: "The ages in almost all instances are followed by the word 'thereabouts'."]

Note also the name BUSTIAN, Christopher (32), as the last name preceding Peter Malbone.

John Bigge or Biggs transported Peter Malbone into VA. John Bigge was charged by Christopher Bustian with neglecting his duties as highway surveyor. John Bigge was mentioned in a land record with Francis Emperor, whose wife's name appears with John's in a list of Quakers of Lower Norfolk.

I believe the R of "RIGGE, John" in the list above was mistranscribed, and that the name should be "BIGGE, John". If this is John Bigge/Biggs, the list may give us the best approximation available of his year of birth - 1626.
