JAMES BIGGS, born ca 1824 probably in TN (1860 census says b NC), died after 1870 census, probably in either Daviess Co or Caldwell Co MO; married in Vermilion Co IL 28 Oct 1849 Martha Ellen "Marsey" Judd, b 5 May 1828 KY, d 14 Oct 1912 Carthage, Jasper Co MO, buried Park Cem. The 1850 census of Vermilion Co IL shows the household of John Biggs, b ca 1805 TN, followed immediately by that of William Judd, b ca 1795 KY. James and Martha are listed in Vermilion Co IL in the 1850 census, in Holt Co MO 1860 and in Daviess Co MO 1870. In the Holt Co census, Alexander Judd 24 IN is in James' household. He is quite possibly the Alexander Judd listed as 16 KY in William Judd's household in Vermilion Co 1850. Martha, widow, is listed with children in Breckenridge, Caldwell Co MO, in 1880, and in Carthage, Jasper Co MO in 1900 and 1910. In the mid-1850's the family was in Iowa. A son was born in Decatur Co, Iowa, in 1858. Judging by the birthplaces of other children, the family spent the Civil War years somewhere in Indiana - seemingly at Terre Haute, in Vigo County - and returned to Missouri by 1869. Martha's obituary said she was the mother of 12 children. In 1900 six of them were living; in 1912 five survived her: John, Ellen, William, James and Rhoda. Children: 1. John Franklin Biggs, b in Illinois 15 Nov 1851, according to death cert. 1850 census shows a John aged 4 months. He died 10 Apr 1927 in St. Catherine, Linn Co MO; buried Old New Garden Cem two miles west of St. Catherine. Married sometime after the 1880 census Anna "Nannie" Wright, b ca 1864 or Jan 1860 in Indiana. The 1910 Linn Co census shows her as the mother of 13 children, only 4 of whom were living in 1910. Children, from 1900 census: a) Emma Biggs, b 1890; b) Dora Biggs, b Sep 1891; and c) Myrtle Biggs, b Oct 1893. The 1910 Linn Co census shows a daughter Rosa, age 17, who may be the same person as Dora. Only other child in household then is Myrtle, listed as 15. 2. Ellen Elizabeth "Nellie" Biggs, b Jan 1858 in Iowa. Listed as Elizabeth on 1860-1880 censuses and as Ellen in 1900 and 1910. Married first in Livingston Co MO on 6 Feb 1876 to Richard G. Hughes, b ca 1852 OH; m/2 ca 1889 Dr. August Rhoads, b Aug 1838 OH. Rhoads was 1st Sgt of Co F, 8th Indiana Infantry, during the Civil War, for which service Ellen received a widow's pension. She is listed as the mother of no children in 1900; of 1 child, none living, in 1910. In the Rhoads household at Carthage in 1900 were Mollie Biggs, b Jan 1870 IL IL OH, described as August's "sister-in-law", and Nellie Biggs, b Mar 1886, listed as "ward". At Carthage in 1910 Ellen has her mother and Mollie in her household. Mollie is described there as Ellen's cousin. [A WorldConnect Project submission on August and Ellen Rhoads reports that Ellen is listed in the 1930 census at Los Angeles CA. On examination, the Ellen Rhoads found who was close in age had her middle initial recorded variously as P and R, and her death record shows her born 18 Mar 1858 in Illinois, died in Los Angeles 7 Jul 1850, father's last name Crow and mother's maiden name Brockman.] 3.
