Mrs. Clymer:
Speaking of name changes, the article "New hypotheses on the maximum damage area of the 1356 Basel earthquake (Switzerland)" written by J. Lambert, T. Winter, T. J. B. Dewez, and P. Sabourault, is the ninth paper in the book NEOTECTONICS AND QUATERNARY FAULT-REACTIVATION IN EUROPE'S INTRAPLATE LITHOSPHERE. The book was edited by S.A.P.L. Cloetingh, Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; and T.G.M. Cornu, Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
In this article historical information recorded about places located in and near Basel Canton are examined. Two places (Butingen and Bettingen) may be of interest to you. According to the authors Butingen, also known as Buttingen and Butingen, is located 4 km south of Basel. The place names Buttingen and Butingen may "reasonably derive from Botingen, which is clearly identified on Mercator 1630 map and corresponds to present day place of Botmingen." Botmingen castle was built in the 13th century and was identified at that time as Wasserschloss. Bettingen, also known as Bietkon, Bettiken and Bietikon, was originally Benken castle (built in the 13th century). A family with a German "habitation surname" would have a 'ger' ending to his or her name, as compare with the 'gen' of a place name. The article includes a number of beautiful maps.
