Notes for ... DR. WILLIAM MILTON BITTINGER:
William Milton Bittinger was born in 1855 in Eastern IA. He earned a
Medical degree and moved to Jefferson County, Arkansas near Pine Bluff. He
obtained his Certificate of Registration as a Practicing Physician to
practice as a Physician and Surgeon in Arkansas on May 10, 1882
Elenore Eugenie de Jean and John Swarbec Hall's second son was John I Hall
[b. 1830]. Kathryn Frances Hall Bittinger was the seventh child of John I.
and Catharine Verdue Bittinger. Her mother died when Kathryn Frances was
born in January 1870. (Note: Catherine Verdue's gravestone in the Grady
Catholic Church Cemetery shows she died in 1869 instead of 1870. Dorothy
Stockdill Russell, and my sisters, says it was well known and often
discussed that Catherine Verdue died at the time of Katheryn Francis'
birth.) She was reared in a house about one mile west of Grady, AR on the
East Side of Bayou Choctaw. Her father, John I, next married Eliza Harden
and had six more children. Eliza died, probably when Alma Hall was born, in
1885 when Kate Frances was fifteen years old.
John I. Hall then married Mattie Merrill and she died in 1887--the same
year Kate Frances Hall, 17, married Dr. William Milton Bittinger, from
Benedict, NE, who was practicing medicine near Grady Arkansas. William
Milton was 32 years old. William and Kate had nine children.
William Milton bought farmland nearly every year. He built and operated a
drugstore and general store in Grady. After the Hall house burned, he built
a two-story house in Grady on the West Side of the bayou.
They went to Benedict, NE at least once for Kate to meet his family.
William Milton and some of his children went to The Chicago Exposition at
the turn of the century.
William died on November 11, 1906. He carried a load of firewood into the
house and as he placed it on the hearth he collapsed and subsequently died
of heart disease. My father was 15 years old when his father died.

Notes for .. KATHRYN FRANCIS HALL:
Kathryn Francis Hall Bittinger was reared in a house about three quarters of
a mile west of Grady, AR on the south side of Bayou Choctaw. This house
burned in the early 1900's. The house was not rebuilt and the area was
always called "The Old Place." She was the seventh child of John I. and
Catharine Verdue Bittinger. Her mother died when Kathryn Frances was born

stillborn baby in December 1906. Kate was a devoted member of the Roman
Catholic church. Kate lived in Grady and saw her children and their families
quite often for the next 47 years. She wore only black and gray dresses
after her husband died. Thomasine Stockdill Wilson says that Kate made most
of her dresses and she remembers one time when someone gave Kate a white
dress covered with black flowers. She would not wear it because there was a
tiny green dot in the center of each flower. She made many crocheted
bedspreads, tablecloths and doilies and played solitaire by the hour after
supper. She didn't want anyone to play cards on Sunday. Thomasine said one
Sunday afternoon a Protestant minister came by and kids were dancing in the
living room and playing cards in the dining room and he looked outraged and
declared, "Dancing and card playing, I hate to think about what is going on
upstairs." Kate was embarrassed and didn't permit card playing or dancing on
Sundays. She died in her home with her children all in attendance on
November 15, 1953 at age 83. Her nine children all lived beyond Kate's
death, but her oldest daughter's husband Harry Mathis died in August 1939.
Kate, William and most of her many descendants are buried in the Catholic
Church Cemetery in Grady.
