I pray you to permit a diverging opinion on whether spelling is or is not important regarding this surname. It is, no doubt, certainly important to the individual who bears the name, but among descendants of Hans Adam Budinger who arrived in Pennsylvania in 1737, aboard the "Samuel, the name has been spelled Beetinger, Bidinger, Biddinger, Bedinger, Beddinger, Betinger, Bettinger, Biediger, Biedinger, Bitinger, Bittinger, often times in the same census a household apart, etc., etc. The descendants of Hans Adam were in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky. The very first birthday card sent to me, a Bedinger, was addressed by an aunt to "Miss Bettinger." My great-grandfather spelled his name Bedinger, but in the 1860 IL census the enumerator spelled his name "Bainger," and the online transcription spells it "Rainger." In family research, it is so important to keep all options open.
