Bickel Family Genealogy Forum

From the date of birth of your John Bickel, it's quite possible that he and Henry were brothers. In case you are not familiar with the geography of that section of PA, Snyder Co. was formed from the lower portion of Union Co. in 1855. So records pre-dating 1855 would be found in Union Co. The county seat of Union Co. is Lewisburg. Bucknell University is in Lewisburg and the library there may have old newpapers from the area on microfilm. Northumberland Co. is right across the Susquehanna River from Union Co. and Snyder Co. McKees Half Falls is in the extreme Southeast corner of Snyder Co., in Chapman Twp. Immediately north of McKees Half Falls are the towns of Chapman and Independence. West of McKees Half Falls is the town of Hoffer. There are several cemeteries in these towns. I've tromped through them and have seen quite a few Bickel tombstones. Also I found a book in the Pennsylvania State Library in Harrisburg called "Tombstone Inscriptions of Snyder County." You'll find Bickel burials in Hall's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Trinity United Brethren Church, St. John's United Brethren Church and Grubbs (formerly called Botschaft) Lutheran and Reformed Church. Another interesting cemetery is Row's in Salem, Penn Twp., Snyder Co., PA. This is identified as one of the oldest in Central PA. There are also lots of private cemeteries scattered on farms in the area. There is a lot of circumstantial evidence that my ancestor Henry was the son of Henry (Heinrich) Bickel and Catharine Shotzberger. Henry and Catharine had daughters whose names are the same as the daughters of my ancestor Henry. It was quite common in German families to give one's children the names of the siblings of the parents. You might also want to check the International Genealogical Index (IGI) at your local LDS Family History Library (FHL). I spent a long afternoon about ten years ago recording Bickel records that pointed to several microfilms which can be borrowed from the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City via your local FHL. Happy hunting. Let's keep in touch as we find more stuff.
