Hello, Janalee! My name is Bob Shively, and I am a descendant of Robert Safford Bickel. Both Neil and I are descendants of Anthony Bickel, the brother of Jacob 'James' and Sussanah (Louck) Bickel. I fully support Neil's opinion that Sophie (Bickel) Staver is their daughter. Here are some of the reasons for our belief.
1) The 1810 Fed Census of Augusta Co, Va shows that family to have males: 1u10; 1,10-16; 1,26-45; females: 3u10; 2,10-16; 1,26-45. We know from various records that Jacob and Susannah's children were all born in Virginia, probably Augusta County.
2) Their known children were: Elizabeth, b 20 Jan 1793, never married. George, bc 1796, m Elizabeth Michael, 4 Feb 1830 by Isaac Stephens, JP. Catherine, bc 1798, m David Dorman, 18 July 1820 by Wm Swisher, JP. Jacob Jr, b 26 Aug 1802, m Lucinda Hawk 16 Feb 1829 by George Bonebrake, Elder. Mary Magdalene, bc 1808, never married. Susannah, bc 1810, m Henry Everding, 5 Jan 1837 by Jacob Gruber, MG. Margaret, b 14 Oct 1812, m John Woolf Jr, 8 Dec 1831 by Jacob Gruber, MG. Sarah 'Sallie', bc 1815, m John Geeting Jr, 11 May 1848 by unknown. Christena, bc 1818, m David Geeting, 24 Aug 1848 by unknown. Examination of these data shows that another daughter born between 1800 and 1810 is needed. Sophie was born 22 Aug 1805 in Virginia - a perfect fit. And who married her to Henry Staver? None other than Jacob Gruber, MG.
3)Jacob Gruber was minister of the German Lutheran Church beginning sometime in 1830 (Book A, Preble Co, Ohio Court Records). During the decade of the 1830s he married in addition to the three, probably four Bickel girls, five Loucks and five Woolfs.
4)Sometime between 1840 and 1850 Censuses Henry and Sophie moved from Preble Co to near Farmersville, German Twp, Montgomery Co, Ohio. There they raised ten children and lived the rest of their long lives. Sophia named their first child 'Susannah'.
5) I have found no evidence todate that any of the other Bickels who came to Preble and Montgomery Counties around 1820 period came from Virginia. Sophia in every census from 1850 to 1880 gave Virginia as her birthplace.

I hope this information will be of some help to you. I am curious to know if you are a Bickel descendant, and if so, how are you related? Bob
