Bibby Surname Origins
Posted by: David Bibby (ID *****1451) Date: June 30, 2007 at 05:59:34

I am trying to find out the origins of the Bibby surname.

The name seems to originate in Lancashire. There are far more Bibby's there than in any other location in the world.

However I have at least two different theories of where the name comes from.

The first one says it is a pet name for Isabel.
The second one from the medieval female name Bibbe.
Bibbe in Denmark is a pet form for Birgit, Bridgit etc.

Northern England was part of the Danelaw in the dark ages where Danish Vikings ruled over the kingdom of Northumbria so there may be some truth there.

If anyone has any other sources of information for this surnae I'd be grateful to hear them.

Many Thanks
David
