Hi Jackie,

Yes, I did get to the VHS and read Philip Ludwell's diary, but it did not say exactly what I was hoping it would.

Basically, this diary concerned Ludwell's journey to Bertie to work on surveying the VA-NC boundary, which was in dispute. Harry Beverley, a surveyor, accompanied him. The 2 NC men were not eager to get the survey done and kept making excuses and creating delays. The surveyor would not show up at appointed times and places or he would neglect to bring his equipment, etc.

Harry Beveley had his equipment and proceeded to survey and the NC men finally cooperated. Ludwell and Harry Beverley deposed several NC settlers, including John Beverely, about where they thought they lived, where they thought they had bought land (which state) etc. They also interviewed several Meherrin Indians. There were only two mentions of John Beverley and neither specifically said that he was "brother" of Harry Beverley, but they did stay at John's house when they were in his area. He also was the ferryman for that area.

So, I did not find proof positive that Harry and John were brothers, but they certainly knew each other.

There may be something more in England that we could learn. If anyone is interested in this diary, it is in the first volume of the 30 or so volume series of the records of North Carolina (not sure of exact title).
Suzy
