I'm sorry that I didn't see your posting years ago! There was a deposition made by Thomas A. Beveridge in 1913, regarding his uncle's (John Maine Beverige's) Civil War pension, and I came across it in John's pension file. In the deposition, he referred to--and showed the pension examiner--the Bible that you have, I think. I'm descended from John's half-brother, Kennedy Mayne Beveridge, and I'd love to know what else is in the Bible, especially what it might say about the second and third wives of Thomas Beveridge, b. 1800. I'd also love to know about your own family line. Here is the deposition: Deposition A Case of John M. Beveridge, Cft. No. 570.480 On this twenty first day of November, 1913, at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Penna., before me, Geo. D. Sidman, a Special Examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeared Thomas A. Beveridge, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says: Age 53 Years, Occupation: Police Sergeant. P.O. Address, 6507 Stenton Ave. Philadelphia, Pa. I have here the old Family Bible of my grandfather, Thomas Beveridge, which came to me through my father, Archibald G. Beveridge, who died in 1903. I find by reference to the Family Record in this book under head of Births, as follows: "John M. Beveridge born July 1, 1838." The record shows that there were nine children in the family. My father was the fourth child and John M. was the sixth. Elizabeth Beveridge, now widow of Thomas Engleby, now resides at Roanoke, Va. She was born April 11, 1834. All the other children older than John M. are dead. (This Bible bears imprint on title page of publication in 1846, by Thomas, Cowperthwait and Co. Philadelphia. The writing in the family record is old and faded and bears evidence of having been written many years ago. -Exmr.) I do not know who made the records of births in this book. The Bible has been in my possession ever since about two months ago. It has been in possession of my sister, Mrs. Nettie Lemerheart, who resides near Doylestown, Bucks Co. Pa. John M. Beveridge, the soldier, is my own uncle and I made the affidavit you now show me. I have no interest in this claim for pension. Have heard this deposition read. The questions asked are fully understood and my answers are correctly recorded. <signature> Thos. A Beveridge Notify Administrator about this message?
