G F Black in his book on Scottish surnames gives the derivation re beaver island you mention. He also says those two Beveridges were fined for producing beer of insufficient strength! He says they appealed though. The English word beverage is derived from Old French, in turn derived from Latin bibere. Scotland south of the river Forth was part of the Angle kingdom of Northumbria. The Angles had kicked out the Britons. Picts defeated Angles at Nechtansmere in 985 and prevented Angle expansion north of the Forth. The King of Scots annexed part of Northumbria. Scottish border usd to be much further south than present. Since the Britons departed the language of south Scotland has always been English. How's that for potted history! I have Beveridge ancestors from Dunfermlines/Dalgetty area. Also Barr family connections who left Fife as coalminers for Pennsylvania. Unable to contact their descendants so far.
