Hugh McLellan BEVERIDGE, was born in March 1824 in Perth, Perth Co., Scotland; and died after 1870 in Govan or Perth, Scotland. He married in February 1851, in Dublin, Dublin Co., Ireland to Elizabeth Ann NOONAN. Elizabeth was born in 1833 in Dublin, Dublin Co., Ireland; and died after 1870 probably in Muskegon, Michigan. Hugh Beveridge served as a private in the British 4th Light Dragoons from 1843 to 1853. This regiment took part in the ill-fated "Charge of the Light Brigade" at Balaclava; however, Hugh was stationed in Ireland on garrison duty at the time. He immigrated with his family from London, England to America in 1854, after the birth of their third child. Hugh enlisted in Co. F, 9th Regiment, Illinois Cavalry for a three year term on 2 October 1861 at Chicago, Illinois. He was discharged by reason of disability (Epilepsy) on 3 April 1862, at the rank of private. At the time of his enlistment, he was listed as age 35, 5'9", fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, born in Scotland, his previous occupation was as a bookbinder, and his residence was in Chicago, Illinois. No pension application was ever filed. Hugh abandoned his family and returned to Scotland in 1870, where he resided first at Govan, then probably moved to Perth. Children of Hugh & Elizabeth were: 1) Anna, m. Levi Wightman, resided Grand Rapids, MI; 2) Thomas Charles, b.1852, d. 1853; 3) Robert, b. 1853; Mary Elizabeth b. 1863.
