Franklin Fayette Spencer (1817-1890) according to the 1880 Chicago Cook Co., IL census was the father of
Abby F. Spencer the wife of Augustus N. Eddy and
Delia Spencer the wife of Arthur Cotton or Catore.

The 1880 Census lists them as Shinser rather than Spencer but does list Franklin as hardware merchant.

Augustus N. Eddy and Abby F. Spencer were the parents of
Spencer Fayette Eddy born 1874 and
Catherine Eddy the second wife of Senator Albert Jeremiah Beveridge (R) Indiana. The following is a brief summary of Franklin Fayette Spencer's business in Chicago, IL - the grandfather of Mrs. (Catherine EDDY) Albert Jeremiah Beveridge.

Anyone with additional information I would appreciate the information.

The young firm of Tuttle, Hibbard & Co. survived many hardships including a fire in 1857 and the panic of that same year. Despite these setbacks, business increased, and they moved to a larger building at 62 Lake Street in 1860.

Five years later (1865), generous, fun-loving Franklin Spencer joined the company to make the title, Hibbard & Spencer. Once again the growth of sales forced them to find larger quarters; the firm moved to 92-94 Michigan Avenue.

1865 Hibbard, Spencer & Co., 92-94 Michigan Ave.* Business resumed briefly at Mr. Hibbard’s House

The Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed much of the stock. That which was saved was removed to William G. Hibbard's home on Prairie Ave. The company immediately sent a letter to its customers, which has an almost legendary aspect today. It established a bond of faith between the company and the customers that has never been broken. The following is a part of the letter which A.C. Bartlett prepared:" In the past, we have endeavored by promptness and fair treatment of our customers to merit and receive the patronage of the hardware trade. We shall redouble our energies in the future." After their brief stay at Mr. Hibbard's house, the company resumed business at 30-32 Lake street, where in a few years they had expanded until they were using all the buildings from 16-32 Lake Street.

Franklin Spencer--Vice President
A.C. Bartlett--Secretary

The Memory of
William Gold Hibbard (1826-1903),
Franklin Fayette Spencer (1817-1890),
Adolphus Clay Bartlett (1845-1922), the founders of this company, is perpetuated by a bronze plaque which has been placed in the main entrance of this building.

The plaque was presented to the company by Mrs. Albert J. Beveridge, granddaughter of Franklin F. Spencer, and was made by John Gregory.

The spirit of enterprise, typified by these men, is again manifested by Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. in the construction of " The Most Modern Hardware Building in the World." 1948
