James Beveridge, my great grandfather, migrated to Phillipsburg, Pa in the late 1800s from Dunfermeline (Fife) Scotland. He married Mary Canning another Scot here in the US. They had two children, James and Robert, my grandfather, who were both born in Pennsylvania.

Other names in our family tree include Bowman, Gorman, Smith and Wilson all Scots from around Dunfermeline. All coal miners.

We have read that that Beveridge (Beverage) is a Saxon name that means Beaver Island. The Beveridges moved north to Scotland after the Saxons were defeated by the Normans at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Beveridge is allegedly one of the more common names in Fife.

We understand that James and Andrew Beveridge of Scotland were so famous for their beer brewing skills that the English language adopted the name for all drinks!

I would welcome your thoughts and comments. Hope this helps....Jim
