James Robert Beveridge, my father, was born in Fairmount West Virginia in 1922. His grandfather, James Beveridge, migrated to the US from Dunfermeline (Fife District) Scotland in the late 1800s.

We have read that Beveridge (or Beverage) is a Saxon name that means Beaver Island. Our research suggests that Beveridges were forced north to Scotland after the Saxons were defeated by the Normans at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Beveridge is now one of the more common names in Fife.

We understand that James and Andrew Beveridge of Scotland were so famous for brewing beer that the English language adopted the name for all drinks!

Research into our family tree has found the names Bowman, Canning, Gorman, Smith and Wilson....all of Scotland. All coal miners!

Hope this helps...drop me a line if you like. Jim
