Hi Lorene: I'm also a descendant of Katherine Keck. The info I have comes from my father and grandfather, compiled back in the 60's, before the days of the Internet. I have no backup documents to prove the accuracy, so as they say, take it "with a grain of salt". Henry Clay Betz. He was born December 14, 1861 in the Alsatia region of France to Katherine Keck and "Unknown". Henry served as a Private in Company B of the 44th Volunteers, Spanish-American War (Philippines?). He married (possibly Henrietta Bachert on October 2, 1883 in Cullman, Alabama) and had one son, Charlie, born about 1890. Charlie (Charles?) served as a seaman aboard the battleship Virginia (BB-13) in 1909. Henry died December 26, 1928, and rests in the Betz Plot at Cullman City Cemetery in Cullman, AL. His headstone at the cemetery can be seen through the following link: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSvcid=71882&GRid=28632664& Henry Clay's mother, Katherine Keck. She was born on October 18, 1843 in Alsatia region of France (presumably the town of Mulhouse) where her family had a bakery. She married (1) "Unknown" in the Alsatia region of France around 1859, then divorced him due to his imprisonment. She married (2) Frederick Betz circa 1868. They met onboard a steamship enroute to America. Frederick was going to Cincinnati to work as a cabinet maker for the Robert Mitchell Furniture Company in Cincinnati, and Katherine was going to visit her sister Josephine in Cincinnati. They helped found the city of Cullman, Alabama, when the Louisville & Nashville Railroad in Cincinnati encouraged migration southward along their railroad right-of-way. Frederick served for one year as Cullman's first mayor. They are both buried in the Betz Plot at Cullman City Cemetery in Cullman, AL. Katherine Keck had one sister and four brothers, as follows: A sister, Josephine Keck, was born circa 1845. She married Albert Steinmuller. Last known location was Cincinnati, Ohio. Josephine and Albert's 3 children were: a son named John, who married and had a daughter named Emily; a daughter named Emily; a daughter named Josephine. All four of Katherine Keck's brothers are unknown, but some or all may have fought and died during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. Katherine Keck's parents, as follows: Katherine's father, "Unknown" Keck was born circa 1810. According to the Cullman County, Alabama census of 1880, he was born in the Baden region of Germany. He married Emily "Unknown", and according to the Cullman County, Alabama census of 1880, she was born in Alsatia region of France. I'm sorry that I don't have more info on Henry. If you live in or near Alabama, visit the library in the city of Cullman and browse through the family tree section. Also try to connect with the local historical society in Cullman where there may indeed be more info about Henry Clay. Regards, Bob Notify Administrator about this message?
