Previous to the 1850 census, an agreement was made between John Morris and Alfred Betts on August 16, 1848. John deeded two hundred acres of land minus eight or ten acres previously deeded to James Skiver (in 1844), including all personal property and farming utensils, in exchange for Alfred providing good and suitable food, clothing, lodging and such things as will make John and his wife, Polly, comfortable during their natural lives. Alfred was also to pay for all nursing, medicines, and funeral expenses, and to pay all honest and just debts. On a separate deed, John then sold him the land for $100. Alfred deeded the land back to John for $100 later in 1850." In another place I noted, "Alfred and Emeline Betts seem to be related to John and Polly, although the relationship is not clear. The 1850 census for Eldred shows John Morris and Mary Chamberlain living with Alfred Betts, age 25 (born 1825) and Emeline Betts, age 23. Although Emma is not listed, she would have been about 13 or 14 years old. Alfred and Emeline were from New York, and a daughter, Florence, age 1, was from Pennsylvania, probably Eldred. Emma married William T. Jones and moved to Kansas, where they are both buried in Waverly Cemetery, Waverly, Kansas. The 1880 census for Big Creek, Russell, Kansas shows Alfred Betts (age 55, from New York), and Emeline Betts (age 53, from New York) with two other daughters; Mary (age 16, from Illinois), and Anna (age 14, from Illinois). William T. and Emma C. Jones were living in Centerville, Neosho, Kansas at that time. Alfred Betts, born April 25, 1825, died March 10, 1895, is also buried in the Waverly Cemetery [near the Jones family plot]. Even though Alfred is only 12 years older than Emma, and Emeline is only 10 years older, there must be some relationship if both Alfred Betts and Emma (Morris) Jones are buried out west in the same cemetery.
