Betts, c.1851 CA, convicted of murder

Looking for information on the surname, Betts, but this spelling may be off the mark. I have information on a man who had a rather dark history, being convicted of murder, and apparently plotting yet another one while in jail. This is certainly not the kind of information most people want to learn more about, particularly in their own family, but if anyone is interested in making this connection, I have some information. This Betts was convicted of murder in gold rush California, c. 1851, and was jailed briefly at Sonora. My g-g-grandfather, David Cooper, was the jailer and his journal is about to be published. I have some anecdotal information, and I would like to find out more about this man if he can be identified further.
