Although a chilling thought today, slavery was a way of life in our American southern states prior to the Civil War in 1865. The Betton Plantation probably produced the cotton which was exported by Meginnes & Betton. Solomon Betton was a male relative of Turbutt, perhaps a cousin and a logical candidate for Overseer.
Slaves had no surnames so they were given the name of their owners. There is an entire line of African American Bettons who derived the name this way.
