STAUNTON - Philip E. Bettendorf, 99, of Staunton died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Staunton.

He was born Dec. 17, 1906, in Woodburn, the son of Conrad and Anna Scheuer Bettendorf. He married Laura Diestelhorst in 1929; she died in 1992. Two daughters and a son also preceded him in death.

Mr. Bettendorf had been a signalman for Norfolk Southern Railroad, retiring in 1972. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Staunton.

Survivors: four daughters, Betty Ulrich of Williamson, Carol Thacker Varner of Litchfield, Fay Heyen of Glendale, Wis., and Joyce Bettendorf of Stillman Valley; 14 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Williamson Funeral Home, Staunton, the Rev. Avis Richardson officiating. Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, Staunton.
