It would be nice to be able to connect all these BETTENCOURTs from St. George (Sao Jorge). My great-great grandmother was a BETTENCOURT (I believe her name was Josephine). She married Antone AMARANT. Family legend says they were "upper-class" which I tend to believe as Grandma BETTENCOURT's brother built the chapel in their hometown of Biere. The other children, Joseph, John, Josephine (my great-grandmother), Francis, Manuel, Frank, and Mary all came to California in the 1870s and 1880s. Most of them stayed in Contra Costa County; Josephine and her family ended up in Madera County.
