Hey -- we may be cousins.
My great grandmother was Josephine Amarant from Biera, Sao Jorge in the Azores. Or at least we thought. Several of her brothers and sisters came over from Sao Jorge in the 1870s and 1880s. When we went searching for their baptismal records we couldn't find them. However, a genealogy-cousin who had worked with me on a non-Azores family, had a friend who was translating Portugese records for someone else and offered to see if she could find my g-gma's baptismal record. She did and it revealed that she was actually a Bettencourt. I had guessed that was her mother's surname as both she and a brother's death record used "Bettencourt" as a middle name.
The baptismal record revealed: "Josefa, born 6 March 1855, Baptised in the Mother Church of Sao Jorge on 28 March 1855. Legitimate daugher of Antonio Silveira da Bettencourt and Josefa Rosa Living in Biera. Paternal grandparents are Manoel Silveira da Bettencourt adn Maria de Sao Jose. Maternal grandparetns are Jose Bettencourt and Maria Santa. Godfather is Jose Sores de Souza, single."
We knew this was my g-gma's records because the researcher found records for Antone (b. 1853), Manoel (b. 1848), John (b. 1864), Francisca (b. 1858), Mary (b. 1852). She also located a marriage record for Antonio Silveira de Bettencourt and Josfa Rosa de Bettencourt Amarante (aha, the origin of the Amarant(e) name)
As far as I know, only Antone stayed at Sao Jorge and he did have children. A cousin who visited there said his children were Manual, Antonio, Cosmo, Josephine and Maria.
