I have followed the generation back to the 1st BETANCUR around the 1300's, it is an alias name used by GEORGES DE BETHENCOURT of Normandy France also known as BETTENCOURT of Portugal. I believe him to be my 13G grandfather As far as I know the BETHENCOURT name was used in France and BETTENCOURT used in Portugal, however they are the same family. The variation was most likekly caused by slightly different language dialects throughout the region. The BETHENCOURT's conquered the Canary Islands in 1402, on behalf of king Henry III of Castilla. My 11G grandmother is MARIA PEREZ DE BETANCUR born in Tenerife the Canary Islands in 1560. She is the 1st variation of the BETHENCOURT or BETTENCOURT name outsie of mainland Europe. It becomes very difficult after leaving the Canary's and Acores Islands as the BETANCUR name undergoes many changes. I seem to loose the trail around 1615 after Maria Perez's 1st son DIEGO DE VERA b:1593 leaves the Canaries for New Mexico. I believe Diego to be the 1st BETANCUR descendant on the American continent. I would love to know if anyone has followed the path of the BETANCUR name into Uruguay 1st noted around 1695. I do beleieve there are refrences in Brazil but I can not narrow it down to the southern regions of Brazil. My direct family from Uruguay have deep ties in a region called RIVERA in Uruguay on the border with Brazil. I do know that a BETANCUR married HERNANDEZ around the 1700's. They were two large family's that held most of the land in that region (known as RIVERA) If you have any information of the BETANCUR or HERNANDEZ name originating from Uruguay or southern Brazil, I would love to hear from you.
