Here are some URL's for information on Caribbean genealogy: http://www.rootsweb.com/~caribgw/ http://www.cyndislist.com/hispanic.htm They will help you in finding and learning more about your ancestors. My 11G grandmother, María Pérez de Betancur, was born about 1560, La Laguna, Tenerife, de las Islas Canarias. Her parents were Antonio Pérez, 1527, de La Graciosa, Tenerife, and Catalina Aponte, 1531, de Garachico, Unfortunately, this is as far back with my Betancur line that I have gotten. María Betancur probably used the surname of a grandparent, as was the custom then, but I have no more information. I need to find out how her family is related to the Bettencourt's of Jean de Bettencourt. María married Pedro de Vera Perdomo, also a native of Tenerife. Their son, Diego de Vera, b. 1593 in La Laguna, traveled to Nueva España and eventually into El Reyno de Nuevo México de Nueva España (the Kingdom of New Mexico). The Canary Islands were a jumping off point for explorations and shipping to the New World. It is no wonder that so many of us can trace some of our ancestors to these islands. Buena suerta in your search and remember, no matter how one spells Bettencourt, we all come from the same family. If I find anything of interest to you, I'll post it here.
