William Laing and Janet Bethune married 1868,Janet died in 1875 leaving three children, William, Margaret Blair and James Alexander Williams second wife Isabella Glen reared William and Margaret but James was only a small baby when his mother died and was reared by an Uncle Robert Bethune, and his wife Margaret (nee Paul) they also adopted a nephew Robert Bethune, and at one stage they had living with them a Johann Bethune a niece possibly Janets child born out of wedlock.
