Rhoda Peggy Bethell (1740-) of Rockingham Co. N.C. died before 1773, not in 1822

Rhoda Peggy Bethell (b. 1740) married Rev. Thomas Mullins (1736-1816) in the 1760s, and had at least one child with him, daughter Rhoda (1768-1852) who married David Settle in 1788.

Rhoda Peggy Bethell (Mullins) died by 1773, when a deed was recorded in Surry Co., N.C., to William Davis from Thomas Mullins of Guilford Co. (from which Rockingham Co. was later formed), and “his wife" Elizabeth Mullins. According to Rev. Mullins’s will, and based on age ranges listed on the 1790 census, Rev. Mullins had three children by Elizabeth: Thomas Jr., William and Robert, all born by 1774.

Rev. Mullins married a third time to another woman named Rhoda (last name unknown) about 1804. He had four children with this Rhoda: John (b. abt. 1804), Frances (b. abt 1806), Letty (b. abt. 1808), and Samuel (b. abt 1812). Rev. Mullins’s will of 1816 lists these “four young children”, and approximate birth years are confirmed by age ranges listed on the 1810 and 1820 censuses.

Some sources have assumed that Rhoda Peggy Bethell was the mother of all of Rev. Mullins’s children, and died in 1822. However Rhoda Peggy Bethell (Mullins) clearly could not have had 4 children between 1804 and 1812, when she would have been 64 to 72 years old. The 1773 Surry Co. deed confirms Rev. Mullins had a second wife between the two women named Rhoda.

The will of David Pursell of Rockingham Co., dated 1788, lists a daughter Elizabeth Mullins. This is one possible identity of Rev. Mullins’s second wife.

The minutes of Rev. Mullins’s church, the Lickfork Primitive Baptist Church, note the death of his third wife, Rhoda, on 27 Jan 1822. The minutes refer to her as “Sister Rhoda Mullins Wife and Consort of Thomas Mullins Minister of the Church”. The use of the word “Consort” suggests a premarital relationship before the couple married. This Rhoda’s birth year was about 1770, based on census age ranges in 1810 and 1820 censuses. Her maiden name remains unknown at this time.
