It is my understanding from what my grandparents had told me as a child, that when the slave families were bought by plantation owners, the slaves would then take the last name of the owners. Know it sounds cruel, but that is what I was told; so as one of the others has said, you may want to check for records of plantation owners by last name of Bethea. There were quite a few around the Marion, Dillon and Latta areas of SC, I believe.
